Laura Strybosch

I am Laura Strybosch, born in Johannesburg, South Africa.

I’m a graduate of Victoria College of Art, and my great passion is for drawing. As a child, my parents would buy me weekly comic books, and I loved them. I would sit around, daydreaming and drawing my own comics. My love for that mastery of graphics persists to today. I do regular life drawing at Studio 554 and sketch regularly.

I paint on canvas with acrylics, incorporating collage into the painting for texture and movement. I use different tools to paint and draw on the surface. I enjoy experimenting with layering with transparency and light.

My paintings are essentially monochromatic with the addition of artificial colour that I use on the geometric elements. The geometry creates space and order in contrast to the gestural marks that pervade the surface.

I do printmaking and drawing, and for years was a member of Ground Zero Printmakers, where I had the privilege of learning printmaking from two wonderful Master Printers and Artists, Victoria Edgarr and Alain Costaz. They were so generous with their time and expertise that I am truly grateful.

Participated in various group exhibitions including Gallery at The Mac, UVIC, University Canada West, Ground Zero Printmakers, Xchanges, Sooke Fine Arts, Greater Victoria Library, Ministry of Health and various alternate venues.

Work is part of private collections in San Francisco, Toronto, Victoria and South Africa.
